What's Critical Mass?
Critical mass started as a simple idea: cyclists getting together for regular group rides to celebrate cycling and show that bikes belong on the roads too. It's been happening in cities worldwide since the 1990s.

The basic concept is "strength in numbers" - when cyclists ride together, we're more visible and safer than riding alone. Different cities do it differently, but it's generally about community, sharing road space, and having fun on bikes.

Manchester has several established ride groups, and it would be nice to have even more! It's not about blocking traffic or making political statements - just people on bikes enjoying the city together and following the road rules.

What's Bike Night! About?
Keeping the community spirit of critical mass, adding costumes, bike decorations, and just making it fun for more people. Think of it as a big cycling fancy dress party.

Costumes encouraged but optional! - Dress up as whatever makes you happy. No theme for this ride - could be anything from pirates to pandas.

Light up your bike - Bring lights, reflectors, anything that glows. It looks amazing when we're all riding together, plus it keeps everyone safe and visible.

Family friendly - Kids are welcome! Just make sure they're comfortable riding in a group and can keep up with a relaxed pace.

Meeting Point: In front of the Central Library
Time: 7:00 PM Gather -> Set off at 7:30 PM
Duration: About 1-1.5 hours
Cost: Free

Questions You Might Have About This Event:
Q: Do I need to sign up beforehand?
A: Nope, just turn up. We meet in front of the Central Library / St Peters Square at 7:00 PM.

Q: I don't have special lights or a costume - can I still come?
A: Of course! Just bring yourself and your bike.

Q: Will my kids be able to keep up?
A: We keep the pace relaxed so families can join in. Kids should be confident riding with others and able to follow basic instructions, but we're not racing anywhere.

Q: Where do we actually ride?
A: We'll figure out the route on the night! Usually around the city centre and wherever feels good. That's part of the fun - no fixed plan, just following the flow of the group.

Q: What do I need to bring?
A: Your bike, a helmet if you have one, water, and maybe a jacket depending on the weather. Anything else is a bonus.

Q: What happens if it's pouring with rain?
A: We'll still ride unless the weather's genuinely dangerous. Just dress for it.

Q: What kind of bikes can join?
A: Any bike that gets you moving - road bikes, mountain bikes, cargo bikes, whatever you've got.

See you there!
